Here is a a study where the authors did a surgery on animals to induce a kyphosis. This is important as some may argue that a kyphosis is a "normal" variant. Obviously, they are wrong. What they looked at was the cartilagenous end plates and found that when compression was on the endplates from the kyphosis, cells were produced to kill the area(apoptosis). This would result in degeneration.
